The Four Foundations: Tibetan New Year’s Retreat

With Tulku Migmar Tsering and Michael Friedman

Flexible Dates

As we approach the close of this Tibetan lunar year, we welcome all who wish to engage in focused spiritual practice to join our annual Tibetan New Year’s Retreat. This is a precious opportunity to clear away negative patterns of thought, word, and deed, and to make space for our wisdom, love, and dignity to manfiest in the year ahead.

Traditionally, actions performed in these final days of the lunar year are considered to carry special potency, making this an auspicious time for deepening one’s Dharma practice. Whether you are new to these essential practices or looking to strengthen your connection to them, you are invited to join in person or online, participating at the level that best suits you.

Retreat Format & Participation

This year, the retreat is open to anyone wishing to engage in more focused practice at the close of the Tibetan lunar year. Participants are welcome to:

  • Attend the teaching sessions and Q&A as a way to learn about essential practices in our lineage of spiritual transformation.
  • Join the group practice sessions and focus on the practice you are most comfortable with, based on your level of experience.

To make this retreat accessible to as many people as possible, online participation is available on a donation basis. This allows a broad community to benefit from this precious opportunity for practice.

Retreat Focus: The Four Foundations (Ngöndro)

We will delve into the Four Foundations of the Vajrayana path, fundamental practices for purification, merit accumulation, and deepening connection to the Dharma:

  • Meditating on the Four Transformative Thoughts
  • Taking refuge and cultivating bodhicitta
  • Engaging in confession and purification practices
  • Making mandala offerings
  • Practicing guru yoga, as outlined in The Guru’s Heart Practice that Dispels All Obstacles (Tukdrup Barché Kunsel) of the Chokling Tersar tradition.

These practices are essential for progressing in Vajrayana and serve as a powerful foundation for any Dharma practitioner.

Guidance and Teachings

The retreat will be guided by Tulku Migmar Tsering, who will provide teachings on each of the Four Foundations, along with live Q&A sessions for participants.

Additionally, Michael Friedman will be present to provide further guidance on how to integrate these foundational practices into daily experience. This is a perfect opportunity to clarify your understanding and deepen your connection to the practices.

Flexible Attendance & Online Access

  • Attend in person or online—flexible residential options are available.
  • Live-streamed teachings & practice sessions (recordings provided).
  • Online participation is available on a donation basis, making this retreat accessible to as many as possible.

Join us in closing the lunar year with these powerful practices of purification and transformation, creating fresh space for wisdom, compassion, and clarity as we step into a new year.
